Pre-Hajj Health Tips For All Hajis

HajjHajj is one of the five basic pillars of Islam which is mandatory for all the Muslims who are financially and physically capable of doing it. It is an annual Islamic gathering in the Kaaba, Saudi Arabia which is considered as the largest gathering of people in the world with millions of pilgrims. Hajj is performed every year in the last month of an Islamic calendar, Zil-Hajj. All the Muslim countries in the world receives millions of Hajj applications every year, from which people are selected by keeping in view the capacity.

In order to protect all the Hajis from different diseases during Hajj, the Saudi Ministry of Health had issued some pre-Hajj tips. Those important pre-Hajj tips are given below.

Important Health Tips For Hajis

  • First of all, Hajis should take necessary vaccinations and especially those who have suffered from chronic diseases.
  • Always have check-up by the doctor before performing Hajj to check your ability and physical stability.
  • If you are suffering from diseases which require regular medicines like diabetes, kidney diseases, asthma, hypertension and heart diseases, always take your medicines with you before performing Hajj.
  • You have to change your clothes regularly during Hajj ceremony, that’s why you should have enough clothes with you which should be loose and light.
  • You should also have to take all the diagnosis reports of your diseases in case of any emergency during Hajj.
  • All the necessary supplies and cleaning goods should be in your bag like clothes, loose cotton, moisturizing creams, tooth paste and brush, towel and shavers etc.
  • Painkillers, wound-sterling tools and heatsink should be in your bag.
  • Blood sugar measurement device should be in your bag if you are suffering from diabetes.
  • Always try to move your legs time to time when travelling in the bus or plane to avoid swallowing.
  • You should have to undergo all the required medical tests in case when you are suffering from tuberculosis. You should also have to submit a report which ensures that the disease would not be transmitted to others.
  • However, Hajis are recommended to not perform Hajj until and unless they get recovered from the disease.

Following are some necessary vaccinations with their time and age group provided by the Ministry of Health, should be taken by all the Hajis:

Meningococcal vaccination​ ​All pilgrims and children over two, as well as pregnant women At least 10 days before Hajj ​Compulsory, for three-year immunity.
​Polio vaccination ​Pilgrims of all age groups hailing from regions stricken by polio. At least 10 days before Hajj ​Another dose is given to the pilgrim when arriving to the Kingdom.
​Vaccination against pneumonia ​Patients with such diseases as sickle cell anemia, renal failure, immunodeficiency, and splenectomy. It could be given, also, to the elders and those suffering from chronic diseases in the liver, heart and lungs.
​Vaccination against seasonal influenza ​All pilgrims, especially the elders, those suffering from chronic diseases, patients with immunodeficiency (natural and acquired alike), as well as patients with metabolic diseases, obese persons, and pregnant women (beginning with the fourth month). ​Six weeks before Hajj.
​Vaccination against yellow fever Pilgrims hailing from places affected by the disease, such as African semi-desert regions, and some South-American countries. ​At least 10 days before Hajj Up to ten-year immunity.
