Karachi express is one of the oldest trains operating in Pakistan which is preferred by passengers to travel between Karachi & Lahore, due to its timing and ticket fares.
Karachi Express started its operations in 1940s, it was named after the biggest and largest city of Pakistan. Initially the train connected Karachi with Peshawar via Lahore route later on in 1999 the train was specifically designated the Lahore-Karachi route.
Fully air-conditioned train used to travel nonstop between Lahore and Karachi making only one stop of considerable time length at Khanpur Station. Later other classes were also included with more stops at different stations between Karachi & Lahore without affecting the time schedule of the train.
Schedule of Karachi Express Train:
The Train covers the distance from Karachi to Lahore in almost 18 hours making it one of the fastest train between the two provincial capitals. Green Line takes 16 hours 15 minutes while Pak Business Express takes 17 hours 15 minutes to cover the distance between Lahore & Karachi.
It departs from Karachi at 4:40 PM and reaches Lahore in the next morning at 10:35 AM. It passes through Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Rohri, Bahawalpur, Multan, Khanewal, Sahiwal, Raiwind & Kot Lakhpat before reaching Lahore Junction.
From Lahore the train departs at 5 PM and reaches its destination of Karachi Cantt at 11:10 AM.
The ticket charges for different class of Karachi Express are as follows:
AC Business = Rs. 4,410
AC Lower/Standard = Rs. 3,100
AC Sleeper = Rs. 5,510
Economy = Rs. 1,570 for berth and Rs. 1,470 for seat
These rates are considered affordable with multiple options for the passenger to choose from, any traveler can chose between AC Business to Economy class at affordable price.
Online Ticket Purchase:
Pakistan Railways also allows online booking and reservation of tickets through the official website of Pak Railways. Passengers can also use the android mobile app to book tickets from their smartphones, the app is available for download from Google Play Store.
Suspension & Resumption of Karachi Express:
The train service was completely suspended owing to serious financial crisis of Pakistan Railways during 2008-2013 period. The shortage of other resources including the Engines and power vans were important contributors behind the suspension of the oldest and popular train service of Pakistan.
In May 2013 overhauling of Pakistan Railways resulted in refurbishment of the express and as a result the Karachi express started its operations again with Economy class coaches, Business class coach and Air conditioned sleeper coach. The route was also changed, the train was now planned to run between Karachi and Lahore through Khanewal section covering about 1260 Km.
