Sindh Cracks Down on Restaurants Refusing Card Payments

May 9, 2025

The Sindh government has taken a strict stance against restaurants and other commercial outlets that refuse to accept debit and credit card payments from customers.

According to The News, authorities have warned that serious action will be taken against businesses, including restaurants, shopping malls, cafés, and biryani outlets that fail to offer electronic payment options.

The Sindh Consumer Protection Authority, under the Bureau of Supply Prices, has already initiated enforcement efforts by issuing formal notices to several well-known eateries in Karachi’s Clifton area. These businesses are being charged with violations of the Sindh Consumer Protection Act 2014, and legal action is currently underway.

Director General Zahid Hussain Shar reaffirmed the government’s resolve to uphold consumer rights, stating that all restaurants across Sindh, particularly in Karachi, must comply with the requirement to provide electronic payment options or face legal consequences.

He noted that the action was prompted by public complaints and is being pursued under Section 23(4) of the relevant authority’s regulations. An official inquiry has also been launched to address the issue and provide relief to affected consumers.

Assistant Director Mir Shahnawaz has issued firm instructions to the concerned businesses, demanding they immediately stop denying card payments. Restaurant owners have been ordered to appear in person or send an authorized representative to respond to the notices. Failure to comply will result in legal proceedings under applicable laws.

DG Shar stressed that it is a legal and ethical obligation for businesses to offer convenient payment methods, and any negligence in this matter will be dealt with strictly. He assured that the government remains committed to protecting the rights of consumers throughout the province.
