Karachi express is one of the oldest trains operating in Pakistan it started its operations in 1940s named after the biggest and largest city of Pakistan the train initially connected Karachi with Peshawar via Lahore route. Later on in 1999 the train was specifically designated the Lahore-Karachi route. Fully air-conditioned train used to travel nonstop between Lahore and Karachi making only one stop of considerable time length at Khanpur Station. Down the lane Karachi express had included in it Economy class coaches along with it number of stopovers was also increased.
Karachi express used to be the most popular train which covered the distance with a blazing speed closing the distances between Lahore and Karachi.
The train service was completely suspended owing to serious financial crisis of Pakistan Railways during 2008-2013 period the shortage of other resources including the Engines and power vans were important contributors behind the suspension of the oldest and popular train service of Pakistan.
In May 2013 overhauling of Pakistan Railways resulted in refurbishment of the express and as a result the Karachi express had included Economy class coaches, Business class coach along with an Air conditioned sleeper coach. The route was also changed, the train was now planned to running between Karachi and Lahore enroute it will pass through Lodhran, Jahanian and Khanewal section covering about 1260 Km.
The train leaves from Karachi for Lahore at 17:00, after short stopovers reach Rohri Junction at 23:30 and afterwards pulling over for short intervals train reaches Multan at 06:15 in the morning then the train resumes its journey making stops of short time intervals at number of stations before it reaches its final destination Lahore Junction at 11:45. For the journey down to Karachi the train leaves Lah1ore at 17:00 making a major stopover at Multan at 22:00 also stops for short intervals in between. Afterwards the train reaches Rohri Junction for a 25 minutes stop at 04:30 enroute to Karachi it makes short stopovers at different stations before reaching Karachi Cantt Station at 11:45.
